Realism Verses Abstract Realism Introduction

Art is a form of expression that reflects the world around us, and prominent styles that have emerged over the years are Real and Abstract Realism. While both styles aim to capture reality in their own ways, they differ in their approach and execution.  I prefer abstract realism and this is the type of art most prevalent in my gallery.

What Is Realism In Art

Realism, which emerged in the 19th century, focuses on accurately depicting the natural world and everyday life. Artists using this style strive to portray objects, people, and scenes with precision and detail, often techniques such as chiaroscuro (the use of light and shadow) and perspective to create a sense of depth and realism. The subject matter of Realism often revolves around common, ordinary subjects, and the overall philosophy of the style is to present an objective representation of reality as it is.

One of the most famous artists associated with Realism is Gustave Courbet, known for his painting “The Stone Breakers,” which depicts two laborers breaking rocks. Another notable artist is Édouard Manet, whose work “Olympia” caused controversy for its frank portrayal of a nude woman. These artists and their works exemplify the principles of Realism by capturing the rawness and truthfulness of everyday life.

What Is Abstract Realism

On the other hand, Abstract Realism combines elements of both Realism and Abstract art, blending realistic depiction with abstract elements to create a unique and visually striking style.  See my poppy example at left. I painted my interpretation of a red poppy dominated with pink highlights. Compare this with a real red poppy and you will see the difference.

Artists in this genre often use techniques such as distortion, exaggeration, and selective focus to create a sense of ambiguity and mystery in their works. The subject matter of Abstract Realism can vary widely, from still lifes to portraits to landscapes, but the underlying philosophy is to explore the boundaries between reality and abstraction.

An artist who is known for his Abstract Realism is Francis Bacon, whose paintings often depict distorted and grotesque figures in a haunting and surreal manner. Another artist in this style is Gerhard Richter, whose photorealistic paintings blur the lines between reality and imagination.
